THE CARING COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Hello/Buenos Dias Northside Family!

I am your Northside counselor, Deborah Caveness.  This is my fifth year to work with NS students and staff—what an honor!  With 29 years spent in education, as a science teacher and counselor, there are many experiences to draw from.

‘Changing hats’ throughout the day assures that there is never a dull moment…and, it is fulfilling to know that I helped a student…or, anyone else.  From our school-wide morning meeting, that includes daily support for our Honorable Character program, until the final bell, the day is packed:  assisting students, teachers and parents with needs/concerns (educational, social, personal, etc); coordinating with staff and principals to ensure students receive special program services or community resources as necessary; assessing students for the Gifted/Talented program, LAUNCH program or language development for the bilingual/ESL program; coordinating with outside sources to present programs that support our efforts to teach students responsibility, self-esteem, being a friend, drug-free and anti-bullying information, etc.

However you think I may assist you at Northside, please give me a call.  I am happy to help make this a wonderful year for you…because, “We Are Family!”

MORNING DISCUSSION

JANUARY 17-20:  GOAL—SHARING THE RIGHT THINGS

Hey Northside boys & girls!  Most of the time, sharing is a very kind thing to do.  But sometimes...sharing isn't healthy...and can even be dangerous!  Remember that at school, we don't share food of any kind.  Did you also know that it's never a good idea to share drinks, chapstick or combs either?  When we remember these things, we help keep each other safe and healthy.

Let's think of other things we can and can't share...

  • We can use and share school property--desks, chairs, computers and supplies...but, remember--it isn't ours to take home and keep.
  • Taking turns deciding what games to play
  • Sharing friends at home and school is a great way to show your good character
  • When sharing the "last" of something at home (like the last cookie or piece of pizza), it is polite to allow the other person to choose which half they would like.

NORTHSIDE BOYS & GIRLS SHARE PROPERLY = GOOD CHARACTER!

****OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB!****

KEEP THE MAIN THING,

THE MAIN THING!

(THANKS DR. JOE YOUNG!)
